Neurological Physiotherapy Fellowship

This 3 months fellowship program is designed to equip physiotherapists with advanced knowledge and skills in the management of individuals with neurological conditions. Through a combination of didactic learning, practical experience, and exposure to cutting-edge technology, you will gain expertise in optimizing patient outcomes across various neurological diagnoses.

Program Structure:

The fellowship is divided into three core components:

Theory (1/3rd): This component will provide a strong foundation in neurological rehabilitation. Topics will cover:
- Advanced neuroanatomy and neurophysiology
- Pathophysiology of major neurological conditions (stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.)
- Principles of motor learning and re-learning
- Spasticity management strategies
- Assistive technology and splinting
- Neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation
- Gait analysis and training techniques
- Current evidence-based practice in neurological rehabilitation
- Research methodology and design

Practical Exposure (2/3rd): This component focuses on honing your clinical skills through:
- Rotations in various inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings (neurology, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury)
- Hands-on training with advanced equipment:
  - Lexo-gait trainer
  - Underwater treadmill
  - Balance Master
  - Surface Electromyography (sEMG)
  - Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
  - Body Weight Supported Gait Training
  - Virtual Reality
  - Isokinetic Trainer- Primus
  - Mobi-L Active Passive Trainer
  - Amadeo for Cognitive Training

- Development and implementation of individualized treatment plans
- Case presentations and discussions with faculty
- Observation and participation in therapy sessions led by experienced therapists
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with Neurosurgeons, Spine Surgeons, Neurologist, nurses, occupational therapists, and speech therapists

Surgical Exposure (Elective): This elective component allows you to gain deeper insight into the surgical management of neurological conditions through:
- Shadowing attending surgeons in operating rooms during relevant procedures
- Attending surgeon outpatient department (OPD) visits to observe post-surgical patient management

Evaluation:

Your progress will be evaluated through a combination of methods, including:

Case study presentations
Clinical skill demonstrations
Preceptor evaluations
Research project completion (optional)

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate of completion and be well-equipped to pursue a career as a specialist in neurological rehabilitation.

Faculty: The program will be led by a team of highly qualified physiotherapists, physiatrists, and other healthcare professionals with extensive experience in neurological rehabilitation.
Research Opportunities: The program will offer opportunities to participate in ongoing research projects or develop your own research under faculty guidance (optional).
